From drawing to ground semi-finished product

A carbide component rarely starts with grinding. In practice, the process begins with the application and a technical drawing. The application determines not only what needs to be made, but also which type of material is suitable, what pre-processing is required, and how efficiently the production process can be organised. At GSE Carbide, we support customers at various stages of this process. From material advice and technical coordination to the pre-grinding of carbide rods into a precision semi-finished product. In doing so, we actively contribute ideas regarding manufacturability, costs and lead times. In this article, we show how a technical drawing ultimately leads to a ground semi-finished product and why good preparation makes all the difference.

Material selection

Choosing the right carbide grade has a significant impact on the performance of the final tool or component. Depending on the application, we recommend, for example, a grade with high wear resistance, higher toughness, or a combination of both properties. In doing so, we consider factors such as:

  • the material to be machined;
  • the load on the tool;
  • the machining conditions.
Within the GSE Carbide range, various grades of carbide are available from stock as standard, including GSE06, GSE10 and GSE10F. In addition, we also supply many other grades of carbide on request. Each grade has its own properties and area of application. By consulting with customers on the choice of material at an early stage, we prevent them from encountering limitations or incurring unnecessary costs later on.

Pre-processing

Once the material has been selected, the process of producing a semi-finished product begins. In many cases, a carbide rod is not supplied directly in its final form. First, we carry out pre-machining operations in which the rod is ground to a shape based on the drawing, ensuring it is ready for the customer’s subsequent machining. Examples include:

  • circular grinding of diameters;
  • pre-shaping of rods;
  • producing specific lengths.
The customer can then apply the final cutting geometry or carry out further machining themselves. This approach saves time in the customer’s own production environment and ensures a consistent starting point for the rest of the production process.

From drawing to production

A technical drawing forms the basis of every order. Upon receipt, we first check that all the necessary information is included. We then draw up a quotation and determine which processes are required to achieve the desired result. Once the quotation has been approved, the production plan is finalised and the grinding process begins. During and after production, we carry out checks to verify that the semi-finished product meets the specified requirements. These checks are recorded in measurement reports. Only when all dimensions fall within the specified tolerances is the product released for delivery. In this way, we ensure a reproducible process and consistent quality.

From single items to mass production

Not every order involves large quantities. Sometimes it’s a prototype, a test component or a single item for a specific application. That’s why GSE Carbide supports both small and large production runs. Among other things, we manufacture:

  • prototypes;
  • one-off items;
  • small batches;
  • medium-sized batches;
  • mass production.

This allows customers to test a design first before scaling up to larger quantities. Once a product has been validated, it can be reproduced to the same specifications. This provides a reliable basis for repeat orders.

The importance of a detailed drawing

A precision-machined semi-finished product starts with a comprehensive technical drawing. The more clearly the specifications are defined, the more efficient the production process will be. Furthermore, a detailed drawing reduces the likelihood of misunderstandings, follow-up queries and corrections during production. The following details, amongst others, are important for a quick and reliable quotation:

  • dimensions;
  • tolerances;
  • preferred material;
  • quantities;
  • any positional and shape tolerances;
  • additional technical requirements.

Is some of this information missing? If so, we’ll be happy to help. Thanks to our expertise in carbide, pre-machining and CNC grinding, we can assist customers in turning an idea or design into a practical, manufacturable semi-finished product. This means that a technical drawing can be transformed into a product that’s ready for the next stage in the production process.
